As a longtime IEEE volunteer for more than 25 years, Ashutosh has served in many leadership positions at various levels within IEEE including the section, region, chapter, society, TAB (Technical Activities Board) and MGA (Membership Geographic level) and has demonstrated sustained contribution in various conferences and meetings since 2006. In addition to various humanitarian and technical contributions, Ashutosh has also contributed significantly to conferences and meetings. Ashutosh has established new conferences with unique themes, technology workshops, one day summits, Industry Days, and webinars that he co-chaired and led to a successful completion for multiple years at various parts of the world. These events were technically enriching focused on 5G, helped the humanity and beyond technologies and also resulted in overall financial surplus for the society. These also helped These events had multiple positive outcome including spreading the knowledge about 5G technologies to different types of people in various parts of the world, including industry, academia and government at the grass root level, industry outreach, and financial benefits.
As Director of Industry Outreach Board and Member-At-Large of IEEE Communications Society’s Ashutosh created a framework for industry engagement and led more than 90 highly successful and high impact 5G Summits (www.5gsummit.org) worldwide starting with the first 5G Summit in Princeton University. These summits helped to engage IEEE with local industries and experts worldwide and created various 5G assets for IEEE. Ashutosh strongly believed in the concept of “Global means doing it locally everywhere” and managed to replicate more than 90 summits around the world with the help of local chapters. As the Industry outreach director within IEEE Communications Society’s BOG, Ashutosh created a model framework with three models for these summits that provided flexibility to local chapters and also paved the way for potential collaboration with other organizational units. These summits provided membership benefits and also drove the membership growth in various parts of the world. This framework also established a strong collaboration with MTT society. ComSoc and MTT societies have been organizing 5G summits since 2017 during IMS conference. Ashutosh also initiative the first Next G Summit on June 14 at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.
As a founding Co-Chair for Future Networks for 7 years and Communications Society’s Member-At-Large Ashutosh demonstrated his leadership in creation of International Networks Generation Roadmap, building IEEE 5G/6G Innovation testbed. Ashutosh co-founded the IEEE 5G World Forum in 2018 that was later renamed to Future Networks World Forum. Ashutosh has served as founding Co-Chair of this conference since 2018. Over the last five years this flagship conference has attracted more than 500 attendees with about 150 papers and more than 70 sessions each year. These conferences have also resulted in 20% profit making these financially viable. Additional details about this conference can be found at https://fnwf2022.ieee.org/. This conference has hosted keynote speakers from industry and academia including Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn among others. This conference continued to run even during the COVID time in virtual mode followed by Hybrid in Montreal in 2022. During 2023 this conference is taking place as in-person mode in Baltimore during November 13-15. Many of these keynote talks from the last 5 years are archived in IEEE.TV and the papers have been archived in IEEE Xplore.
Ashutosh realized early on that it is important for the government agencies to understand the benefits of 5G and apply these technologies to various government verticals like homeland security, Army, Defense, health professionals, first responders. Keeping this in mind, Ashutosh established a new workshop series called 5G Workshop on First Responder and Tactical Networks in 2018 and has served as the chair for this conference since then. He also continued to lead the workshop during COVID time with many virtual tracks and speakers from around the world. These workshops have helped various government agencies to get in-depth knowledge of 5G and beyond technologies. They could then apply these technologies appropriately for their respective applications. He continues to organize these workshops at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) in Laurel, Maryland and 2023 is the 6h consecutive year. More details about this workshop can be found at https://futurenetworks.ieee.org/conferences/2023-first-responder-and-tactical-networks-workshop. Talks from these workshops are already archived in IEEE.TV that provide monetary value to IEEE and technical value to people in the world and to the first responder and tactical networks community.
Understanding that IEEE needs to work on reducing the digital divide in the world, Ashutosh co-founded the IEEE Connecting The Unconnected working group. As the Co-Chair for IEEE Connecting The Unconnected (CTU) working group within IEEE Future Networks, Ashutosh worked with IEEE staff and fellow volunteers and conceived the idea of hosting a challenge and summit to address the digital divide problems. The challenge has attracted 270 submissions from 69 countries in 2021, 226 submissions from 43 countries in 2022 and 296 submissions from 59 countries in 2023. This is a unique initiative to find out novel concept and proof-of-concept work that can be deployed widely to help address the digital divide issues. This challenge has awarded 25 awards in both the categories. Some of these award winners got funded by various venture capitalists and got support from local NGOs to get these implemented. The third year of challenge is underway now and the summit will take place in in-person format in conjunction with flagship conference Globecom 2023 in Malaysia. More details about the CTU conference can be found at ctu.ieee.org. Vint Cerf is among one of the Industry advisory members. After the successful two years of challenge and summits, many foundations, namely Lemelsohn, USAID have come forward to support this activity. Google, Facebook, Microsoft are also among the patrons for this conference. Many of the ideas from challenge are being standardized right now.
As the chair for IEEE Princeton / Central Jersey Section Ashutosh continued to spearhead the IEEE Sarnoff Symposiums. He served as conference chair in 2009 and has served as its steering committee chair until 2017.
As the chair of IEEE Future Networks Ashutosh initiated various IEEE Future Networks Virtual Workshops for the 14 technology roadmap working groups towards 5G. These workshops were free and gave chance to people around the world to contribute in an open manner. Ashutosh worked with the co-chairs of various working groups and helped to organize these workshops. Each of these workshops lasted for about two days. Many of the speakers from these workshops also contributed to Tech Focus within Publications working group in Future Networks.
Ashutosh co-established the unique IEEE Integrated STEM Education Conference in 2011 and has continued to serve as Co-Chair since then. This conference has been co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Education Society chapter of Chapter of Princeton / Central Jersey Section and has been taking place at Princeton University for the last ten years. Ashutosh continued to hold this conference in virtual mode even during Covid without any interruption IEEE ISEC conference allowed the students from High School to publish their papers and posters in IEEE Xplore. Since this is held on Saturday, this also allowed the parents, teachers and siblings of the high school students to attend. Some of the past keynote speakers include Congressman Russ Holt, past IEEE presidents, Princeton University professor Vince Poor, executives from various industries, NASA scientists among others. More details about this conference can be found at https://ewh.ieee.org/conf/stem/. Going forward this conference will take place at Princeton University and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in alternate years.
Besides the conferences that Ashutosh helped establish, chair, promote, Ashutosh has also contributed to many of the ComSoc sponsored conferences and workshops as below in various capacities,
